Like others said in the the thread of the truck struck by lightning, sell it as fast as he can.

What’s up with Mazdas and structural rust ? My area is not know for rust at all and there is an abnormal amount of surviving 70s/80s/90s econoboxes that are still daily drivers. The 90's/early 00's Mazdas can’t even make it here.

That torque converter got a little warm.

IIRC for the longest time they used a simpler pre-primer dip process which offered less corrosion protection than the multi-step process other car companies use:

Also, the other causes of r usting from the inside out is inadequate sealing of seams which the anti-corrosion dip can’t get into, and the body design not avoiding “traps” where water and salt can get into and stay there.

I would say all three contribute to this:

I am genuinely impressed that the transmission that clutch pack came out of still worked. The worn-off friction material must have clogged up the pressure relief or something to be able to clamp those now-smooth discs together!

You almost can’t even tell that those were the frictions! At first glance, I thought those were the steels, with some schmoo on them. Had to pay attention to the inner and outer teeth to tell them apart.

Likewise. If there weren’t a hint of friction material on the one I’d have trouble believing that that’s a set and not from two different packs and the photo staged .

Crunchy and rusty but with just a hint of spectacular lubrication...so I laughed!
